CBD For Chronic Pain Relief

CBD is an oil that is derived from the cannabis plant and may be beneficial for those suffering from chronic pain due to inflammation. CBD on its own is not psychoactive, it does not change a persons state of mind, unlike another cannabis ingredients like THC which does produce a high. Legal in Canada and in many US states, CBD may provide you with many possible health benefits include reducing your inflammation and controlling your pain.

Where does CBD come from?

CBD comes from the cannabis plant, and is also referred to as hemp. Hemp grown for food and fiber in Canada has been legal since 1998, and legal in the USA since the passing of the 2018 Farm Bill. CBD oil for medicinal use comes from these legal hemp plants.

How CBD works

CBD works by the effects created when the cannabinoids in the oil react with two receptors in the body called CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are located throughout the entire body and are responsible for movement, pain, emotion, mood, thinking, appetite, memories and many other functions. CB2 receptors are located in our immune system, and they deal with the affects of pain and inflammation.

For this article we will concentrate on the conditions relevant to Chronic Pain, Fibromyalgia, and other disorders associated with these issues.

Chronic Pain & Inflammation Relief

CBD can be a wonderful and natural alternative to traditional pain relief medications. CBD reduces inflammation and the pain associated by preventing the release of the compounds that trigger it in the body. When taken internally as a tincture with drops placed under the tongue, CBD can go to work quickly. Although there is no regulated dosage charts for CBD oil, it is advisable to start low and increase as needed. Doses can be once daily to help prevent inflammation on up to twice daily for more chronic conditions.

As a natural product, CBD falls in the supplement category, which means by law manufacturers aren’t allowed to make any specific claims or say on the bottle specific doses. There is only one (so far) exception to that called Eoidiolex, which is the first cannabis-derived product that is FDA regulated, and available by prescription, specifically for Epilepsy. The standard dosage for this drug starts at 2.5 milligrams per kilogram of body weight, used twice daily, for a total of 5mg per kg each day. Following one week of use the dose may be increased under the direction of the prescribing physician.

So if an oil comes in 3 strengths from low to high. Start low once a day.

For inflammation due to arthritis or joint pain, both a tincture (drops under the tongue) or applied to the skin as a topical ointment can be highly effective. Studies have even shown that CBD can help not only with the inflammation of joint pain but also to reduce inflammatory skin diseases and help to heal scarring.

CBD for Fibromyalgia

CBD may be a very beneficial natural pain relief agent for those suffering from Fibromyalgia. As the way CBD works with pain receptors in the body can be effective for this condition as well. Supplements that feed the body and help to heal the nervous system at the core would be my first form of attack. However, using CBD as an alternative to pain medications can be highly effective and another source of pain relief. CBD oil for fibromyalgia is being effectively used in any clinics across Canada and there is significant research being conducted specifically for this condition. See supporting research:

Personal Experience: CBD is an excellent pain medication alternative. It has helped me greatly when dealing with Fibromyalgia pain. I personally use CBD at times I would normally reach for aspirin, Tylenol or muscle relaxants, or other pain medications as it seems to have a longer and more soothing effect on my nerves. I in no way say that CBD is a cure for anything. But from my personal experience, it has basically replaced my use of pain killers. It’s another tool in the tool box. Along my journey I found the root cause of my pain was from a gene mutation that causes deficiencies in the body to folate and other nerve regulating components, so I use a nutritional approach with natural supplements to address the root cause and CBD as a pain relief solution when I would normally reach for traditional pain killers. On pain days I put a dropper full into a morning nutritional shake and or under my tongue and head out the door to face the world! E Unruh

Anxiety, Depression & Sleep Disorders

CBD may be beneficial to help reduce anxiety. Due to its relaxing effects and ability to reduce inflammation CBD seems to have a calming effect on the nervous system and seems to show evidence that it is effective for anxiety disorders. This includes: PTSD, general anxiety disorder (GAD), panic attacks, social anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. This relaxing effect on the nervous system can also be beneficial for depression and sleep disorders. Although there is no regulated dosage for CBD by government regulators, it is advisable to start low and increase as needed.

Migraine & Headache Relief

CBD may be beneficial for headache and migraine suffers. As many headaches and migraines are triggered by stress and muscle tension. Taken internally by tincture for overall inflammatory relief or as a topical cream rubbed in on the pressure points of the forehead, temples, base of neck and shoulders and some even say the pressure points on the hands and feet. See supporting research for use to treat migraines:

Cancer & Nausea from Cancer Treatments

The research in the use of CBD for Cancer and Cancer treatments is exciting. CBD appears to suppress cancer growth and to even help aid its destruction. CBD is being used during some cancer treatments and with some chemotherapy treatments as an added way to fight the cancer and help with the nausea and pain associated with treatment, helping the immune system fight the disease.

BD research is ongoing for how it may help prevent the growth of cancer, reduce anxiety, improve the effectiveness of chemotherapy and lessen its side effects. See supporting case study:

Acne & Psoriasis

Using CBD as a topical agent on skin inflamed by Acne and Psoriasis may be extremely helpful. Acne is caused by inflammation and over stimulated sebaceous glands, and like Psoriasis and other inflammatory skin issues, reducing inflammation can help minimize the severity. See Supporting Case Study:

When CBD should not be used

CBD should not be used during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Talk to your doctor. CBD should also not be used when it interacts negatively with current medications, or if any allergies to the product exist.

Best Practices for CBD

Talk to your doctor about introducing CBD as a natural alternative to your current pain medications. Discuss any potential interactions with any medications you are on and use a diary to log your doses and frequency of use. This will help you find the right amount and will help you determine its effectiveness in your unique situation.

CBD can be used:

  • Mixed into food or liquid drinks such as shakes
  • In Capsule form
  • As a tincture under the tongue
  • And as a topical oil or ointment applied directly on the skin

Effectiveness will depend on the correct dose for you and for what condition you are using it for. Consider starting low and increasing as needed. Make sure you trust the source of your CBD oil, and the purity and strength. The use of CBD is still not legal everywhere so be sure to check before taking it with you on your travels.
